Joe Flacco Says That He’s Willing to Re-Structure His Deal
Joe Flacco has been a very good quarterback for the Ravens. He’s won a Super Bowl in which he was the MVP and tied Joe Montana‘s record of 11 TDs in the playoffs with no interceptions. He also received a $120 million contact after he won The Big Game in 2013.
His contract consisted of a $29 million signing bonus and option bonuses of $15 million and $7 million. The option bonuses were paid out in 2014 an 2015, respectively.
In the first three years of his deal, he received $62 million.
In 2013, Flacco had a fully-guaranteed base salary of $1 million for a total first-year compensation of $30 million and a salary-cap figure of $6.8 million.
In 2014, Flacco had a $6 million base salary that was guaranteed for injury, but that would have voided once the first option was paid. His salary-cap figure was $14.8 million in the second year of the deal.
In 2015, Flacco received a $4 million base salary that was guaranteed for injury, however was voided when the first option was paid. His salary-cap figure is $14.55 million.
The Ravens went 5-11 in 2015, their worst season since 2007. This was the year before Flacco was drafted, where Steve McNair, Kyle Boller, and Troy Smith started games. Also in 2015, Matt Schaub, Jimmy Clausen, and Ryan Mallett all started games in place of the injured Flacco.
In a radio show with WBAL, Flacco discussed restructuring his deal.”Come on, I want to win, so I want to do everything we can to get something done,” Flacco told WBAL Radio on Thursday morning, in an event to promote a Special Olympics charity event. “I don’t know exactly what that is or exactly what that’s going to be because we haven’t talked about it yet. But I know that that’s a huge number and it’s not really realistic.”
Flacco’s cap number would jump to $28.55 million this season. That would rank third in the NFL.
“I’m open to doing something. I want to be here for a while,” Flacco said. “I want play football here. That’s what it’s all about.”
According to Flacco, his rehab for his torn knee ligaments is “going very well.”
“I’m coming along great,” Flacco said. “I don’t think there is any way I’m not going out there ready to go right away. Don’t quote me. But that’s just me. I have no timetable. I’m really taking it day by day and getting better and better each week.”
Side Note (Small Rant)
We all know that Flacco has been highly dependable for the Ravens. He isn’t perfect, but that’s to be expected in a highly competitive league such as the NFL. However, in Baltimore, we know that their will be chirping from the fans that he was greedy for taking the contract in 2013.
You know that if some foolish fans on 105.7 The Fan will say, “What about the first three years of his contract? He was selfish. The Ravens lost key players due to his contract.” They’ll say it even if he takes a pay cut. They will say that Mallett should be the starter because “he can fit the ball in tighter spaces than Flacco can.”
It’s stupid. I’ll just leave it at that.
