Washington State’s Luke Falk is the steal of the 2018 NFL Draft

There have been some knocks against former Washington State quarterback Luke Falk. Some scouts have said that he has a weak arm or he’s injury-prone. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein gave Falk a fourth-fifth round grade in his scouting report. However, I am of the belief that Falk will be the steal of the NFL Draft and should go even earlier than the fourth or fifth round.

Falk is 6’4, 215 lbs. and looks the part of being an NFL quarterback. He’s tall, has 9.25-inch hands and is highly accurate. At Washington State, Falk played in 42 games, completing 68.3% of his passes for 14,481 passing yards, 119 passing touchdowns (5.8% of his passes) and 39 interceptions (1.9% of his passes). He was also a three-year starter with the Cougars.

Given the criteria stated by former NFL head coach Bill Parcells, Falk fits the mode of an NFL quarterback:

1. Be a three-year starter (started three years at Washington State)
2. Be a senior in college (Redshirt senior)
3. Graduate from college (earned degree in social sciences in Spring 2017)
4. Start 30 games (started 42)
5. Win 23 games (broke the Washington State career wins record by a quarterback, that was previously at 24 wins)
6. Post a 2-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio (119-39)
7. Tally a completion rate of 60 percent or higher (68.3% career completion rate)

Let’s go deeper into his accuracy. Falk has just about a 3:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He will hit his targets, even when falling off balance and he doesn’t make errant throws into the defense. His ball placement is among the best in this year’s draft and he’s going to put the ball into the bread basket.

He may not possess the arm strength that teams tend to covet out of an NFL quarterback. However, he can improve his arm strength with an NFL weight program. The same could be said for his durability, as he won’t play in any games immediately if things were to go well.

Taking a look at Falk’s game tape against Oregon in 2017, he has some good throws and some bad throws. However, Falk often makes all of the reads, goes through his progressions and has an extremely quick release. That is the mark of an NFL quarterback and someone who takes his craft seriously.

He has drawn some comparisons to Chicago Bears backup quarterback, Mike Glennon. However, is a completely different player in my opinion.

NFL Comparison: Tony Romo

His ability to scan the field and make solid throws, as well as making throws off-balance reminds me a bit of Tony Romo. Romo was an undrafted rookie, but proved to the Dallas Cowboys that his accuracy made him worthy of becoming a starter. Falk is similar in my opinion because he may not have a cannon for an arm, but he makes smart throws like Romo.

Like Romo, he does tend to scurry under pressure. Despite that, if he is surrounded with a talented offensive line, he will have a very good NFL career.
