The ‘Power’ Rankings: Who is the Best Character on the Starz Series?

Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, we determine who is the best character on the Starz hit series.

In an age where the popularity of cable television is dwindling, ‘Power’ just seems to get the people talking. Us fans of the Starz series have been waiting long enough, but the Season 5 premiere is on Sunday night. The show features several strong roles, making for a very intriguing dynamic and storyline. The nuances of each character has contributed to the growing success of 50 Cent’s ingenious creation. But, which character is the best? We have the answer on the ‘Power’ rankings.

Honorable Mention: Raina St. Patrick

10. Cooper Saxe

Saxe played a decent-sized role in Season 4, but with the death of Mike Sandoval, his role is bound to expand in the upcoming season. He is an Assistant United States Attorney, who will likely develop into a character with the importance of a Greg Knox, who was also murdered. Saxe is arrogant and a slick talker, but other than that he hasn’t been very memorable up to this point. He’s a go-getter, but that pompous attitude without merit may get him knocked off sooner or later.

9. LaKeisha Grant

Besides being La La Anthony in real life, LaKeisha had been somewhat of an after-thought in the series. That was, until she started a romantic (or maybe just sexual) relationship with Tommy. Serving as Tasha’s right-hand woman, Keisha plays a fairly significant role. Considering the emotional ending to Season 4, it’s not hard at all to imagine her being involved in more meaningful scenes in Season 5. She’s down to earth and hasn’t done anything to set the people off yet.

8. Tariq St. Patrick

Tariq St. Patrick is the character that everyone loves to hate. He may be a kid, but I haven’t encountered many kids, with the resources he has, be so stupid. He’s a privileged child, but instead decides to be a spoiled brat. His lies and rebellious behavior cost his twin sister Raina her life. He consistently puts himself in sticky situations that he can’t get out of without help. After avenging the death of his sister to close out Season 4, however, expect for him to become a star in Season 5. Hopefully, it’s for the right reasons this time around.

7. Angela Valdes

Angela has several redeeming qualities — she’s beautiful, intelligent and ambitious. However, she is not without her share of character flaws. The most obvious of her transgressions, is that she was having an affair with a married man. Since coming back into Ghost’s life, things have been on a downward spiral. Not that she caused it, but she certainly didn’t help it either. How does it work when the newly-appointed Head of Criminal of the Eastern District of New York is dating the biggest got damn drug dealer in New York City? It doesn’t.

6. Dre

Dre Coleman is another character that we love to hate. He’s a young hustler with bold aspirations to be something great in the streets. But, doesn’t it seem like he’s biting off a little more than he can chew? Through manipulation, he has climbed his way up the food chain to usurp Tommy as the distributor for the Jimenez cartel. Dre has some of the tools, sure. But he’s overly confident in his abilities to become a kingpin. Dre has the potential to be a star in Season 5, but it remains to be seen if he can rise to the occasion.

5. Joseph Proctor

Joe Proctor is the baddest man in a courtroom since Johnny Cochran. He has a shady secret that he’s hiding which may rear its ugly head at some point this season, but that doesn’t detract from the greatness of his character. He has built a strong relationship with Ghost and it shows in his legal efforts. Proctor does not back down from anyone and does what it takes to win. He’s savvy and clever, and without him, the many of the dominos on this show would’ve already fallen.

4. Kanan

Kanan Starks is one grimy son of a you know what. If a man murders his own son, he clearly isn’t wrapped too tight. The streets are all Kanan knows and he has a knack for using that to his advantage in terms of getting what he wants. Whether you want to admit it or not, we all thought that Kanan was dead after his epic battle with Ghost. But Kanan evoked his inner Curtis Jackson and gave himself extra life. Kanan is a great character primarily because of his ruthlessness and “who gonna stop me” attitude.

3. James “Ghost” St. Patrick

That brings us to the show’s main character — James St. Patrick (aka Ghost). The way that he has been able to balance living a double life up to this point is remarkable in and of itself. There have been several speed bumps along the way for him, but somehow, he still stands tall. The fact that he stepped out on his marriage is a major character flaw, however. His love for Angela got him in plenty of sticky situations, but with the help of others, he has been able to make it through. Ghost is both a monster and a man. He ultimately wants to get out of the life once and for all, but the death of Raina has drawn him back in.

2. Tasha St. Patrick

Tasha has done her fair share of dirt over the course of the show, sleeping with Ghost’s driver Shawn and that cornball Terry Silver. Her infidelity was utilized to match that of James. An eye-for-an-eye isn’t always the best course of action, but Tasha has proven her loyalty to her family time and time again. Tasha realizes that by marrying Ghost, she married the game too. She is willing to go to whatever lengths necessary to protect her loved ones. Tasha’s character has really taken shape as the series progressed and she is the definition of a true ride-or-die.

1. Tommy Egan

Tommy is a bad man. He often exhibits wild and erratic behavior. His favorite hobbies are snorting coke and hurting people. But, Tommy is as loyal as it gets, almost to a fault. After losing his drug network to Dre and company, expect him to be hungrier than ever before in Season 5. Where as Ghost is in and out of the game, Tommy is in it for the long haul. He doesn’t want to get out. Live by the sword, die by the sword is the perfect mantra to describe Tommy. He is the most thorough character on the show.
