TDT’s 10 to Watch This Year

With 2015 in our rear view more and more everyday the good people of The Demo Tape felt that we should look at some people poised to my major moves in 2016. Without further ado here’s TDT’s First Annual 10 to Watch list.

Tory Lanez

2015 saw Lanez drop the biggest hit of his career with “Say It”. He closed out the year by dropping not one but two well recieved mixtapes in The New Toronto and Chixtape 3. With momentum fully on his side, 2015 looks to be a big year for the Toronto artist. Competition is stiff between Lanez and other artist like PARTYNEXTDOOR and Bryson Tiller, but the ball is firmly in Lanez court. Continue reading “TDT’s 10 to Watch This Year”

TDT’s November Playlist

Once again it’s on. Another month has gone by so the writers here have had some time to reflect on what songs they’re bumping the most. We’ve got some new faces this month there’s as much variety as ever. Let’s get to it.

Justice

  • PnB Rock “Aftermath”- I actually enjoyed doing the artist spotlight on PnB Rock. It was a pleasant surprise to discover a local artist that brings such energy in his music. (Read more about PnB here)
  • Shy Glizzy “First 48″- I’m not the biggest Glizzy fan, but I decided to give his latest mixtape a listen and this song had me stuck for a couple days. Glizzy rides this Zaytoven beat perfectly.
  • G Herbo “Rollin”- I’m not even going to lie, I haven’t listened to “Ballin Like I’m Kobe” in it’s entirety because my brother kept playing this song in my car and I’ve had this, along with a couple other songs, on repeat for weeks.
  • Dave East “Fuck You Think”- Before I even listened to any of Dave East’s music, I found a freestyle by him on Sway In The Morning and it was so gritty, from the lyrics to the way he delivered it on the show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEPEVno6wEY). I was hoping it was a song, and here we have the second track off of Black Rose. (read more about Dave East here)
  • Freddie Gibbs “Deeper”- Pinata has some of the smoothest production I’ve ever heard. Madlib really outdid himself throughout the whole bum and particularly here with the 70s soul sample. Combined with the storytelling of Gangsta Gibbs, this whole album is one of my favorites this decade.

East Up Next: Get Familiar With New York’s Next Star

I’ll admit it, I was late on Dave East. I’d heard his name mentioned frequently by dudes on Twitter in the same breath as Manolo Rose, 2 Milly, and Tray Pizzy, rappers bringing back the old New York sound. I started bumping East last summer and was a fan from the jump. It started with “The Offering”, the first track off of his Black Rose mixtape…

That shit was (and still is) just hard to me. Continue reading “East Up Next: Get Familiar With New York’s Next Star”
