The best workouts are those that are free and convenient. Free- for obvious reasons. Convenient, because you can easily embed them in your daily or weekly routine. There are several outdoor workout options for warmer weather and indoor workouts for colder days. It’s hard to voluntarily exercise, but the below free and convenient options will hopefully make that choice a bit easier.
The simplest outdoor workouts to get you started are walking, jogging, and running. You can do these around your neighborhood, at your local track, or in a downtown area (be cautious of traffic, please). Working out alone can get boring so an occasional change of scenery helps. Doctors recommend people who are just starting a workout routine to first take walks, then gradually increase intensity to jogging or running.
Another simple outdoor exercise is through equipment at a park. If the park has no workout equipment, use what’s there. Whether it’s the monkey bars, a park bench or a swing, it’s fine if you get a good workout and are not blocking children from enjoying the playground. If you have a basketball or tennis balls and rackets, a basketball or tennis court in your neighborhood provides a competitive way to stay active. Playing tennis against a workout partner can add a fun element to what might otherwise be a mundane routine. You can exercise nearly every part of your body without stressing it out. The same goes for basketball. Whether you shoot around by yourself, or play half or full-court with someone, time will fly by as you engage your body, especially your arms, during a game of basketball.
There are plenty of free apps like Nike+ Run Club, Runtastic Results, Nike+ Training Club, and Adidas All Day Fitness to track your activities. Explore various options to see which apps best fit your exercise needs. The advantage of free workout apps is that they are easily accessible via phone or tablet, and can link with some smart-watches. You can also log all your workouts and participate in workout plans if you need a little motivation (read accountability).
Online fitness is another convenient source for workouts. There are numerous YouTube channels with free exercise content. Simply search for videos in a specific category like yoga, bodyweight, Zumba or Pilates. Blogilates, for example, is a channel with a selection of Pilates videos. Pilates is a good strengthening and toning alternative for people that do not want to use weights. POPSUGAR Fitness, another channel, features several fun cardio workouts from Zumba to Barre to kickboxing. Spreading a variety of workouts throughout the week is like having five personal trainers helping you for free. You can get the most out of your workouts with variety. Lack of money or time is not a good enough reason to be inactive.
