There is no better way to add spice to your week night than with a free Salsa class. AGUA Night, a Cuban dance event, happens every other Wednesday at the top floor (VIP Lounge) of Café Citron in Washington, D.C.
Things you need: An open mind.
There is a beginner’s Cuban dance lesson from 8:30 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. followed by open dance until midnight. Though the lesson is Cuban dance, other dance genres are covered throughout the night like Rumba and Bachata.
The class was not crowded so I had the benefit of clearly seeing the instructor’s every move. The earlier you arrive, the more you’ll learn- when open dance time comes around, you should at least know a few basics to get the most out of the experience.
Since Salsa is a partner dance, where the man leads the woman, it is good to be prepared to dance with more than one stranger. Guys, you will lead. Be assertive but don’t be too rough. Make deliberate moves to ensure your partner does not bump into other people. Ladies, follow the guy’s lead. This is part of having an open mind.
“I can’t dance.” Well, that is what the beginner’s lesson is for. Go out there, loosen up a bit, and you’ll have a good time.
“I have two-left feet.” Well, the fact you have feet should make it that much easier to dance.
“It will be my first time.” Well, everything you have done began with a first time; so, do not worry. AGUA Night is a good mix of seasoned Salsa dancers and beginners.
“I am unfamiliar with Cuban music. How can I dance to it?” The music the DJ plays is easy to dance to. You are unlikely to feel awkward with the steps. Besides, you might hear a Cuban Salsa remix of a familiar song. The DJ played a Salsa remix of Rod Stewart’s “Roxanne.” Yes, Roxanne. When it came on, you better believe I was moving!
You will most likely not leave AGUA Night as a great Salsa dancer. You will leave slightly better than you were before. You will be surrounded by passionate and open minded people. Take it as a chance to have fun, dance off stress from work, and add variety to the routine happy hour.
