300 Entertainment is holding one of Baltimore’s best artist hostage. After exploding in 2016 with his hit “Bank Rolls,” Tate Kobang signed a deal to the label founded by Lyor Cohen. Unfortunately for Tate, the deal he agreed to was a 360 deal.
For those unfamiliar with what a 360 deal is, it’s an agreement in which the label to which an artist is signed to takes a cut from all of the artist’s revenue sources - a “360” of collecting money all around from everything. Whether that be merchandise, sponsorships, touring, or any other ways an artist makes money. Traditionally, a label will either sign an artist to a partnership deal or a deal in which they only take a cut of their record sales. For Tate, his 360 deal has affected his ability to provide for himself, his family, and his kids.
While Tate has an impressive discography, only three of his songs are available on major streaming outlets. None of his last four projects are available on streaming aside from his single “North North.” 300 has made a clear statement that they are either trying to destroy Tate’s career, or have completely forgotten about him. If you haven’t seen Lyor Cohen’s interview on the Breakfast Club from last week, some of things he says during the interview regarding handling artists are almost cringeworthy.
I say all of this to say two things - 1) artists, stop signing to 300 Entertainment 2) 300 Entertainment needs to let Tate out of his contract. When it comes to crafting music, there are few in Baltimore better than Kobang. And the fact that he isn’t getting to showcase his talent to its fullest potential because of his label situation is beyond unfortunate.
