Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. This aphorism cannot be expressed enough. Running a successful entrepreneurship venture, especially whilst starting from scratch, requires a high level of coordination with personnel and partners, upper echelon strategic sales and marketing, and a cool level-headed attitude; all on the level of a well-respected and established Fortune 500 company. Factor in all the obligations and implications behind the building process for an entrepreneurship venture with having to sustain revenue and living expenses on a lower/middle class level because the capital may not be where it needs to be to be a full-time entrepreneur, and you therein have the justification for the disproportionately high-ratio of failed entrepreneurship ventures in juxtaposition to successful ones from those of a lower/middle class. It is for this gallant effort and success that The Demo Tape honors the work, progress and platform of Tierra Brown, Founder and CEO of tbrownmedia and pxfitness.
If one has a talent, they should hone it as much as possible, as they never know they could find themselves doing something they love for the rest of their lives while turning their passion into their paycheck. From around the age of 17-18, TBrown began going to artist showcases in which the artist performance selections were not displaying the artists from her area that deserved their rightful shine. Thus, instead of simply complaining about it, the DMV boss herself created her own spotlight and platform for the artists and the stories that she wanted to see, birthing tbrownmedia. A sharp shooting markswoman in her own right with her own camera, TBrown began conducting groundbreaking innovative interviews with local creatives, sharpened her photography/videography skills while freelancing for herself in service with others, curating over six artist showcases under her own brand between across the DMV area, Philadelphia, and even Atlanta.
TBrown and I also talked about her #MediaMondays segments, in which she actively highlights brands and artists that she knows that are hot (and she’s usually always on the money). Her activism in this sense gives light to the very type of artists she wanted to see, instead of tweet ranting about it like many others simply do.
It was through selling merchandise from tbrownmedia that the origins of pxfitness, her next greatest following entrepreneurship venture, was spawned. After losing a lot of weight through hard work through exercise and proper eating/dietary habits, TBrown created the pxfitness brand, complete with models, fantastic dietary guides, meticulous and fruitful merchandise that looks and feels attractive beyond words, and marketing that shows that TBrown always means Big Bidness like a Big Sean and Metro Boomin track.

I asked TBrown questions about Black Entrepreneurship in particular, because while it is one thing to be a hard working entrepreneur with the pre-described impediments, it can be argued that it is even harder being a Black Entrepreneur in today’s economy with limited resources, discrimination, low consumer confidence in our communities, and more. Being a respected Black Entrepreneur in her community and those she thrives in, TBrown stated that, “We have to support each other and grow.” Pop-Up shops and being omnipresent at key local events also helped her organically build her brand. It’s one thing to be an entrepreneur, it’s one thing to be a Black Entrepreneur, but it’s another thing to be a Black Woman Entrepreneur: going against prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination of counting a sister out when she’s just trying to hustle like the rest of us. Asking TBrown about this aspect of her entrepreneurship, it was shown that the resume and portfolio speaks for itself. She says loves empowering other women and giving opportunities for her platform to help build platforms for other women like her. TBrown is self-made with her business acumen and simply did the research to application to get where she wanted to go. No offense to these type of individuals, but TBrown got real in our interview speaking about how many ask her not just the surface level questions, but the intricacies of her business, sales strategies, etc. It is of no offense to them intended when she answers their questions of simply doing the research and work. At the end of the day, her business is her business: the marketing, sales stratagems, secrets to success, etc. She can give help and advice, but no handouts of information to shortcut the hard work and hustle needed for an entrepreneur to truly strive.
“You didn’t go and ask Nike?”
She stated in regards to intricate inner-business working inquiries about her ventures. If you wouldn’t ask Nike or Apple all of these questions, then the mutual respect for her as a business is also needed. But how does an individual become so motivated, dexterous, and phenomenal with every single part of their entrepreneurship schedule whilst maintaining a regular life? Even though she did many tasks and follow-ups herself, TBrown did not shy away from thanking her friends for their frequent support throughout her pop-up shows, marketing campaigns, etc. Her “To-Do” list is also a big part of her schedule. It helps her gets things accomplished on a business and personal level, even with her workouts. One of the coolest and most appealing parts of TBrown’s brand is her Pineapple design inherent on her pxfitness materials. She jokingly talked about her pineapple head that she would see with her hairstyle and that others would comment on, that would serve as part of the motivation. The Pineapple Express movie, one of her favorite comedies, was inspiration as well. However, a now-late friend, before he passed said the words to her: “Never forget your armor.” No matter how down T-Brown would get or whatever challenges would come her way, she would remember this quote. A Pineapple is sweet on the inside and good for the people, but it contains armor outside with its spikes that makes it tough. In regards to new material and pieces, T-Brown jokingly stated,
“You’ll see it when you see it!”
Regardless, we all know it will be great as always. You can follow her on Twitter and Instagram with @tbrownmedia and @pxfitnesswear to keep up with her incredible entrepreneurship journey and brand.
