In celebration of Women’s History Month, The Demo Tape is highlighting one woman each day with a playlist of their essential songs. Today’s choice is DMV native Rico Nasty.
Rico Nasty’s sound has been described as “bullets and bubble gum,” and nothing could be more accurate for her rockstar image that personifies her branded genre of Sugar Trap music. Rico’s loud personality can only be matched by her captivating, bright aesthetic. Born Maria Kelly, the Largo, MD established an early following with songs such as “iCarly” and “Hey Arnold.” In 2017, Lil Yachty hopped on the remix to “Hey Arnold,” putting Rico in the national spotlight. Through a series of mixtapes, like 2017’s Sugar Trap 2 and 2018’s Nasty, Rico has propelled a bubbling career to performances at Coachella and appearances on the soundtracks of The Fate of The Furious and season 2 of Insecure.
